Abstract

On 23 February 1990 a female Asian Brown Tortoise Manouria emys was radiotagged at Danum Valley Sabah. Subsequently the position of the animal was monitored daily until 1 April and between 13 and 16 April. During brief daily observation data on movements habitat use feeding and mating were recorded. During this period the animal ranged within an area of c. 0.6 km2. Small seedlings herbs fallen fruit and in particular fungi were eaten. The radiotagged female mated with at least two males during the period of study in early March and mid April. Records of other tortoises from the primary forest study area suggest that the minimum population density of Manouria emys in this region is in the order of 7-8 adults per km2
