Abstract

This paper has attempted to put integrated farming in its proper perspective. It may be said that while the concept of integrated farming has been known for a long time in Malaysia efforts to implement it has not been that widespread or significant. Much of this could be attributed to the emphasis on monoculture of paddy and export crops. The buoyant markets and prices of export commodities for much of the 1960s to the 1980s had prevented plantations to undertake perennial crop-livestock integated farming on a large scale but these failed to make any significant impact. The prevailing and prospective low world prices for export commodities has neccessitated a re-look at integrated farming as a strategy to alleviate the declining and low incomes of export crop producers. The NAP3 has explicitly identified integrated farming as one of the strategies that will be pursued over the 1998-2010 period. That being the case the promotion of integrated farming is certain to face many challenges in view of the lack of a comprehensive development plan to identify and put in place the necessary economic foundations (infrastructure RandD HRD capital and finance and institutions) and enabling factors (market development incentives etc). This is the immediate task for planners policy makers implementers researchers and all the key players in the Malaysia agriculture industry.
