Abstract

Sodium is widely known to be a beneficial plant nutrient. When K is deficient Na can act as a substitute to rid plants of symptoms of K deficiency. This study was conducted to evaluate Na uptake and its ability to partially replace K in oil palm seedlings grown in an Ultisol from the Bungor series. Seedlings were treated with various dilutions of seawater and their growth performance was compared with that of compound fertilizer treatments. The roots absorbed Na from diluted seawater and the overall uptake of Na was inversely related to the availability of K. Sodium was beneficial to the K-deficient seedlings and possibly partially replaced the functions of K. On a short term basis diluted seawater (30 v/v) can be used as a nutrient source for K-deficient oil palm seedlings without detrimental effects on their growth.
