New xanthones from mesua daphnifolia and calophyllum inophyllum

Abstract

In our continuing search for new bioactive natural products we have decided to look at plants from the Mesua and Calophyllum genera of the Guttiferae family. Detail chemical studies were carried out on two plants namely Calophyllum inophyllum and Mesua daphnifolia. Three new compunds daphnifolin (1) inophyllin A (2) and inophyllin B (3) were isolated from these plants. Several other known compounds such as annanixanthone (4) and euxanthone (5) were also obtained. Larvicidal assays on Aedes aegypti were carried out on the crude extracts of these plants as well as the pure compounds. The larvae were found to be susceptible to some of these extracts and compounds. This paper reports the isolation and characterization of these compounds as well as bioassay data.
