Abstract

The aim of this work was to analyze physicochemical characteristics and fatty acid profile of seed oil of Lavandula bipinnata. The total lipid content of L. bipinnata seed was 27.2. The oil was liquid at room temperature with a specific gravity and refractive index of 0.971 and 1.480 respectively. The acid value (5.764 mg NaOH/g) saponification number (188.75 mg KOH/g) ester value (182.98 mg KOH/g) iodine value (169.2 mg/100 g) free fatty acid (2.88) and peroxide value (7.62 mq/kg) were comparable with that of sunflower oil. The seed oil possess high concentration of linolenic acid (66.25) followed by linoleic (18.05) oleic (7.20) and palmitic (5.46). L. bipinnata seeds accumulate a high amount polyunsaturated fatty acid (84.31) and a monounsaturated fatty acid concentration of 7.29. The seed oil failed to possess any antagonistic activity against the tested bacteria but a radical scavenging activity (IC50) of 8.15 g/l was observed against DPPH.
