Muscle weight distribution of the Malaysian lesser mousedeer (Tragulus javanicus)

Abstract

Four adult mousedeer were subjected to detailed anatomical dissection. Mean muscle weights and muscle percentages of 94 individual muscles are reported. The mean dressing percentage of 62.1 was greater than that reported for ox buffalo and goat. The carcasses had a high proportion of muscles (83.83) low proportion of bone (15.03) and insignificant amount of fat. This was reflected by a large ratio of muscle-bone 5.6:1. Muscle weight distribution showed that the mousedeer had a higher proportion of total muscle than bulls for standard muscle groups (SMG) 1 2 3 4. Indices of the SMGs of mousedeers relative to cattle were as follows: 1(112) 2(149) 3(168) 4(122) 5(68) 6(61) 7(60) 8(78) and 9(62) Agility and locomotion indices were 105 and 98 respectively.
