Abstract

A preliminary study on the fishery and biology of Nemipterus tolu (ikan kerisi) was conducted off the Kuala Trengganu coast. There are three distinct fishing areas around Kuala Trengganu and trawling is the main method for catching this fish in all the areas. Hook and line fishing for this species is carried out in one area. A total of 250 specimens with size range 112 mm - 206 mm (standard length) for two areas was examined. Size of fish appears to increase with depth and males are relatively larger than females. Two prolonged spawning seasons are likely one from November to February and another starting from May/June. Nemipterus tolu is an active carnivore daylight feeder feeding on fish crustaceans molluscs and polychaets. Stomach content of bigger fish is less varied than smaller fish.
