Abstract
Water hyacinth treatment systems provided good removal for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and nitrate nitrogen. Ninety six percent removal was achieved for BOD and nitrate nitrogen at loadings of 17 g BOD/m2/day and 9.5 g nitrate nitrogen/m2/day respectively. Removal of 55 and 43 respectively were achieved for ammonium nitrogen and total nitrogen. These removals were obtained at loadings of 2.6 g total nitrogen/m2/day and 1.65 g ammonium nitrogen/m2/day. High concentrations of calcium and nitrate nitrogen seemed to affect BOD and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiencies.
