Abstract

A prototype effluent treatment system for the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM) rubber glove manufacturing plant was designed and constructed at a cost of about RM 360 000. The system comprising a rubber trap a chemical flocculation unit a primary sedimentation tank anaerobic and aerobic fluidised beds and a secondary sedimentation tank was designed to treat 120 m3/d effluent. The design of the prototype system was partly based on pilot-plant studies. The construction of the prototype system was completed in September 1996. It was commissioned in January 1997. This paper discusses the development of the prototype system and the comparative evaluation with the conventional activated sludge system.
