Abstract

Tear behaviour of unvulcanised black-filled natural rubber (NR) was investigated by using trouser tear test-pieces. Although the unvulcanised rubber is easily deformable and flows under large deformation it was found that tearing was not greatly affected by the lack of perfect elasticity of the rubber. Tearing energy of unvuhanised black-filled NR increases with tear rate; this might indicate that tear behaviour is predominantly controlled by viscoelastic effects. Mooney viscosity of black-filled masterbatches affect both the tearing energy and type of tear failures. High Mooney viscosity black masterbatches produce higher tearing energy than low Mooney viscosity masterbatches. The effect is more pronounced at low rates than at high rates of tearing. High Mooney viscosity masterbatches also produce small scale stick-slip tearing. The degree of stick-slip tearing is more pronounced at high rates than at low rates of tearing. Low Mooney viscosity black masterbatches produce steady tearing over all the range of tear rates investigated here.
