Abstract
Registered Malaysian homestays are a niche tourism component in Malaysia. After 33 years of existence, the challenges raised by past researcher indicate that the Malaysian registered homestays face competition from unregistered homestay operators, lack of governance, lack of environmental awareness, and lack of youth participation. This chapter explains the concept of homestay sustainability from the four perspectives; homestay owner, government officials, local residents and tourist and provides suggestions to improve the issues faced by the registered Malaysian homestays. This chapter is an extensive review of the concept of homestay sustainability. The subtopics include (i) introduction; (ii) conceptualizing homestay sustainability; (iii) issues faced by the registered Malaysian homestays (iv) perspectives of the homestay owner, government officials, local residents, and tourist of homestay sustainability; (vi) suggestions for improvement of the registered Malaysian homestay; and finally (v) conclusion. This chapter will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Malaysian homestay program.
