Abstract

Ecotourism has emerged as one of the most promising sectors of global mass tourism. It is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people. Maintaining sustainable ecotourism is a very concerning issue. Sustainable eco-tourism development involves educating the tourists about the value of local culture and environment and encouraging them to protect it. The importance of ecotourism in rural tourism development is widespread. Ecotourism helps to enhance local business. Ecotourism is an opportunity to create unique, mutually beneficial economic incentives for cooperation and nature conservation for local people. It has many potentialities like ecotourism provides education about places and biodiversity. There are several challenges of ecotourism too. Even in some well-developed countries ecotourism has failed to bring economic prosperity and peace to the people. MNCs exercise financial and political influence over the host state to create a favourable business atmosphere. There are some codes of behaviour, guidelines and risk management strategies for eco-travellers that should be followed by them. Eco-travellers should prepare themselves to minimize the negative impacts on the environment. Safety, health hazards and criminal issue are the main concerning issues that should be remembered while visiting sensitive areas.
