Abstract

In this chapter, our main focus is on the development of rural community through ecotourism. As tourism has become more important to the region, it has been thought necessary to increase development and infrastructure in order to increase the tourism potential of the region, which has many tourism assets such as unspoilt highlands and glacier lakes, as well as abundant flora and fauna. In addition to the natural resources of the region, there is a community, particularly in the summer. Thus, it is highly plausible that the region holds great potential as a location for 'niche' tourism. While the highlands ('Yayla') were previously only used for grazing animals and farming, today the region is accruing economic benefits from tourism. However, in recent years the region has been negatively affected by the challenges brought by 'massive' tourism development. Although ecotourism has provided some opportunities for raising awareness of indigenous people, local livelihoods, and gendered communities, the local community has to overcome many challenges that come with tourism activities. In this context, our chapter focuses on the story of ecotourism in the region while presenting the challenges and opportunities facing the region today.
