Abstract
Since tourism activities generally are performed in areas where ecological balance is very sensitive, the natural balance of these areas can be easily disrupted if not taken due care. Increasing concerns about the impact of excessive and unplanned construction in destinations and tourism activities damaging the natural environment and forcing the bearing capacity on both the natural environment and the local communities and cultures have resulted in bringing the eco-tourism concept to the fore. Therefore, this study explains the eco-tourism, its aims and characteristics, and its development. Furthermore, because of the fact that eco-tourism activities developed within the scope of sustainable tourism, sustainable eco- tourism and several sustainable eco-tourism cases are underlined. To the extent that eco-tourism is considered under the title of alternative tourism, eco-tourism and alternative tourism types and new trends in eco-tourism (slow tourism, responsible tourism, community-based eco-tourism, botany tourism, agro-tourism and orienteering) are also investigated. The tourism sector positively affects the economic growth and development efforts of the countries. At the regional level, it contributes to the development of new employment areas, to redistribution of income and to balance the regional development. It has socio-economic, cultural and environmental contributions especially with regards to the development of rural areas. Therefore, in this study, the relationship between rural developments is evaluated in terms of the relationship between the rural development and tourism. Due to the fact that eco-tourism is considered to be an appropriate solution for rural development, eco-tourism and sustainable rural development are examined. It was emphasized that sustainability principles should be taken into consideration when implementing eco- tourism and development programs. Finally, another emphasize is made on the role of women in rural development in the study. the significance of making women more effective in rural development, consciousness-raising and awareness programs and the determination of appropriate standards for women’s work are underlined.
