Abstract
Sago palm grown on peat soil has a slower growth rate due to macronutrient and micronutrient deficiency in the soil. Previous studies only focused on straight fertiliser application, and findings have shown imbalanced nutrient elements in the soil, with no significant effect on sago growth performance. Therefore, a study was conducted to examine the effects of three compound fertilisers on young sago palms based on growth in a three-year field trial on shallow peat soil. The experiment was conducted by utilising a randomised block design (RCBD) comprising four treatments: T1 (10.7:9.1:17.3:1.4:0.5), T2 (15:15:15), T3 (12:12:17:2), and control group (non-fertilised plot), replicated four times. The results implied slight significant differences in the growth of sago applied with different fertilisers. The application of T1 slightly improved the vegetative growth of sago palm (i.e., the length of the fronds and the number of suckers) compared to sago fertilised with T3, T2, and the control group. Correspondingly, the highest overall vegetative growth was noted in sago fertilised with T1 compared to other treatments. Thus, despite the slight improvement of sago fertilised with compound fertiliser in this study, the overall growth pattern did not differ much from unfertilised sago. This finding is similar to a previous study on the impact of fertiliser on sago palm.
