The socio-economic impacts of mangrove forest: the case of Delta Kelantan

Abstract

Mangrove forest is a unique forest located of extreme environment. The area not only serves as a natural habitat of various flora and fauna, but acts as natural protector against natural disaster such as big waves and strong winds. Mangrove also have high economic value to local communities as sources of fisheries, charcoal and ecotourism activities. Initially, Delta Kelantan Mangrove Forest (DKMF) was an open land with no colonies of mangrove plants. Mangrove planting in this area was first introduced in 2000. The species planted are Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora muchanata in several islands such as Pulau Tujuh, Pulau Kambing, Pulau Layang-Layang, Pulau Bedal and Pulau Mas. Directly the people in this area benefited from the aspects of livelihood sources such as fishery and other natural protector. This paper aims to measure the direct use value of Delta Kelantan Mangrove Forest (DKMF) specifically as fishery resources to local communities. A total of 501 households were interviewed from twelve villages located surrounding DKMF. The analysis covering descriptive and statistical analysis. The findings show 32% of households were fisherman, whom carried out activities such as catching fish, crabs and shrimps. The average household income is RM 2,174 with approximately RM 374 (17%) income generated from DKMF area. It proves that the rehabilitation of DKMF environment imposed significant value to the socio- economic of local community.
