Abstract

The study investigated the role of cocoa enterprises in improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and buyers in Ondo State, Nigeria. Despite the dwindling fortunes of agricultural products in Nigeria, cocoa has remained vital for economic growth and development. Cocoa enterprises have thus become vital for poverty reduction and rural development. The study was conducted in three (3) local governments in Ondo State, Nigeria. The inclusive population criteria includes the cocoa entrepreneurs in the state i.e. the producers and the buyers. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 142 respondents for the study. The data used for the study was obtained using well – structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as percentages and inferential statistics such as the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), t – test and the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) were used to determine the relationship existing between the variables. The results showed that the highest number of respondents involved in cocoa enterprises belonged to the 50 to 59 year category. Also 44.9% of the respondents have spent about 21 – 30 years in the business and with 40.1% cocoa enterprises contributed significantly to the household welfare level of both cocoa farmers and buyers. The study recommended that government investment in the cocoa subsector should be increased while making sure that credit facilities are available to cocoa farmers. Also, an increase in the participation of youths and women in cocoa enterprises was encouraged.
