Abstract
The FAO estimated that with respect to the total amount of fruits and vegetables produced globally, 15-50% is lost at the postharvest stage, before even reaching the tables of the consumer. Fruits such as papaya are highly perishable and the causes of postharvest losses can generally be ascribed to physiological deterioration, pathological breakdown, pathophysiology injury and physical injury. However, postharvest diseases caused by pathogenic fungi (Colletotrichum sp.) result in great losses to the papaya fruit industry. Synthetic fungicides are still used for control of postharvest diseases. In the context of consumer reluctance to accept chemical residues in food and of public concern for environmental safety, there is an increasing demand to develop alternative disease control methods including exploitation of some natural products from plant bioactive compound. The aim of this study to investigate the plant bioactive compound (linalool, limonene and quercetin) in their efficacy in controlling postharvest disease and shelf-life extension of papaya. In this research, linalool, limonene and quercetin were tested in in vitro at different concentrations (0.5, 1 and 2% w/v) against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides . In particular, a reduction of spore germination was obtained when linalool was tested. Papaya fruits were dipped in linalool solution and stored at 13°C and quality parameters were evaluated. The overall results showed that fruits treated with linalool can reduce postharvest diseases of papaya until 4 weeks of storage at 13°C. The results obtained confirmed that this plant bioactive compound can be successfully used as alternative control means for controlling postharvest diseases in papaya.
