Abstract
A total of six methanolic extracts of leaves from selected Annonaceae species namely Xylopia elliptica X. malayana Polyalthia rumphii Pseuduvaria macrophylla Cyathocalyx ramulijlorus and Goniothalamus macrophyllus were extracted using solvent extraction technique. All the samples were investigated for their anti-inflammatory effect by using hyaluronidase lipoxygenase and xanthine oxidase inhibitory assay. From the results obtained the extract of Polyalthia rumphii showed the highest inhibitory effect in hyaluronidase inhibitory assay with 100% inhibition which was followed by the extract of X. elliptica (85.7%) and the extract of C. ramuliflorus (62.2%) respectively. For xanthine oxidase and lipoxygenase assay all the extracts gave low activity except X malayana with moderate activity (74.2%) in xanthine oxidase assay. No activity was showed by the extract of Pseuduvaria macrophylla in hyaluronidase and xanthine oxidase inhibitory assays.
