Abstract

Geoconservation is a relatively new field in Malaysia and the neighbouring region. Up till now, most works are primarily focussed on preparing database for potential geological heritage sites to be promoted for ecotourism and to be considered for future conservation. Langkawi Islands hosted many of the Malaysian important geological heritage sites, particularly those related with the early geological evolution of the region. Some of these geological heritage sites co-occur with local tourism destinations hence they became very useful for promoting nature- and knowledge-based tourism in the islands. Langkawi geological heritage sites can be packaged into several large geological parks and smaller geological monuments, as well as several protected geosites. Other geological/ geomorphological heritages that need to be protected are several beautiful landscapes, which sometimes remain forever in one's fond memories.
