For the past decade, Malaysia and other South East Asians have experienced a tremendous building boom related to leisure and hospitality sector. The development of many resorts and hotels especially along the coastal regions shows the country' potential as an attractive tourist destination from around the world. Many factors contribute to these phenomena such as the abundance of naturally beautiful sceneries, the vernacular houses and kampungs, the rivers and mountains, the tropical rainforests and mangroves, the natural lakes, the sandy beautiful beaches, the crystal clear sea and coral reefs coupled with the diverse historical and cultural heritage. This article is an attempt to show some fine examples of architectural works which could represent the successful ecological approach for future development and generation. The designer's approach of setting in such an environment is not a simple task. It requires a clever and sensitive one with less or minimum intrusion into the environment. In short, this article suggest. The intimate manner in which an architectural object is being sited on a particular locality against a natural and sustainable backdrop. Selected case studies of resort buildings will be presented. It is intended to illustrate, besides enjoying the benefit from the industry such as employment, economic returns and business ventures connected to it, the existing environment can also be enhanced, improved and modernised.
