Abstract

Unlike traditional tourism, ecotourism is intended to seek satisfactory profits and continuous maintenance of environmental resources. It is value-directed and naturebased enjoyment. Cooperation by the three governments in the development of ecotourism industry can provide a number of essential benefits such as the diversification of economy, employment growth, and regional growth. The development of ecotourism industry in IMT-GT area requires a great deal effort and sustainable strategies, especially pertaining to marketing and product development. Some of the products that can be offered by the three sub-regions are their natural attraction and cultural experience. Thus, recognizing that the sustainability of the industry depends on the quality of natural and cultural experiences offered, and that tourism can he a destructive industry when not properly managed, plans and strategy must be made to ensure that the ecotourism industry is environmentally and culturally sustainable. In view of the importance of regional cooperation in ecotourism for the economic growth of IMT-GT area, this article, in general examines the framework for regional cooperation in ecotourism that contribute to the development and sustainability of the industry. The article also identifies ecotourism products that ca contribute to the growth of the tourism industry in IMT-GT area. The study also identify opportunities and challenges of the cooperation in the development ecotourism in these sub-regions, and, finally, gives some suggestions on strategies and plans pertaining to sustainable ecotourism development that would contribute to the growth of IMT-GT area and further consolidate regional cooperation.
