Issues, challenges and opportunities in biodiversity management in limestone areas in Asia

Kiew, Ruth (2001) Issues, challenges and opportunities in biodiversity management in limestone areas in Asia. [Proceedings Paper]

Abstract

A brief overview of the importance of the biodiversity of limestone formations in asia is highlighted with emphasis of the species richness and high levels of endemism in critical groups, such as flowering plants, arthropods, molluscs and fishes. The challenges facing the manager of biodiversity, such as the various threats to the continued existence of species and communities and the problem of a dearth of data is highlighted. Opportunities for managing biodiversity are very positive since the strategy from protecting maximum biodiversity is already known, such as the need for a network of limestone hills, the need for an adequate buffer zone, etc. A holistic approach is needed when considering exploitation of a limestone area to take into account not only the biodivercity value but also the other values of limestone hills, such as the scenic, the cultural and religious, archaeological, the geological ( caves and jossil5), recreation and tourism values, as well as the value to the local community, for example as a source of birds' nest or guano. Case studies from malaysia will be used to illustrate the above points.
