Araceae (Aroids) is a monocotyledonous herbaceous plant which plays an important role in botanical economic world. Many aroid species has been widely used as ornamental, food, medicinal and aquarium plants. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has taken an initiative to intensively study, locate and subsequently conserve the genetic resources of these species. A survey of the Araceae family was conducted in early 1990's. Almost all localities in Peninsular Malaysia including coastal forests, freshwater swamp forests, freshwater swamp forests, hills and mountains, primary forests and riverine ecosystems have been visited and surveyed. The ecological aspects and data compilation pertaining to the safeguard, conservation and propagation of the species are partly conducted at the School of Biological Sciences, USM.
