Abstract

In Sarawak rice conservation work started in 1963 when 305 accessions were collected. Later in 1966, 184 accessions wr1e collected. In the past no organised effort was made to collect rice germplasm in Sarawak. Efforts were made jointly with MARDI (Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute) Seberang Perai since 1991. Altogether six collection explorations were made jointly with MARDI. 708 accessions were collected during the six explorations. A total of 1440 accessions of traditional rice varieties are currently conserved at the Agriculture Research Centre, Semengok. The seeds are kept in glass jars and stored under air-conditioned storage at 16°C. The area covered the Lundu, Sri Aman, Sibu, Sarikei, Kapit, Baram, Belaga, Bario, Ba 'kalalan and Bintulu Division.
