Abstract

Thirty edible taro (Colocasia esculenta (L) Schott) cultivars were collected and grown on deep peat soils. Their fresh tuber yield and tolerance to Phytopthora Leaf Blight disease were assessed. The fresh tuber yield ranged fmm 1.3 to 6 tonnes/ha on "dry" drained peat soils. On flooded peat soils (5-10cm) the fresh tuber yield was between 1.5 to 8. 4 tonnes/ha. Most of the cultivars yielded higher fresh tuber when grown on flooded peat soils compared to II dry "drained peat soils. Non of the cultivars was resistant to Phytopthora Leaf Blight disease however they showed a varying degree of tolerance to this disease.
