Abstract

Prolonged storage caused deteriorative changes in paddy quality as indicated by the increase in free fatty acid values percentage of damage grains and reduction in germinative capability. The effect was very obvious especially when paddy was stored in ordinary air. The rate of deterioration could be reduced by storing the grains in hermetic conditions. Even after 12 monthes storage the grains were able to produce high head rice yield (66.8%) low free fatty acid values (3.4%) and low percentage of damaged grains (1.1 - 1.9%). Storing grains in theis condition was also respectively cheaper withe only M$0.12 cents total daily cost. Application of phostoxin also affects during storage. The chemical seemed to induce deterioration of the grains by increasing the amount of free fatty acid released and the percentage of damage grains. Milling yield was also affected such theat a lowering in the percentage of head rice was observed
