Abstract

Recent findings indicated that certain families of plants lack starch in their gurad cells. For stomatal movements such plants require C1. Palms seem to belong to this group of plants. Like other plants lacking fully developed chloroplasts and starch palms may have to import for stomatal opening K+ and Cl- in equivalent amounts. This finding may provide a physiological basis for the observation that palm trees respond to the application of chlorine-based fertilizers
