Abstract
Preliminary information indicated that heavy nitrogen dressings at rated far in excess of normal amounts enhances growth flowering and fruiting. Amongst the growth parameters leaf and to a lesser extent secondary branch production were the most affected by nitrogen manuring. The most actively growing parts of the canopy which produce both the vegetative and reproductive parts are the most sensitive to changes in nitrogen supply. A close association between leaf production and reproduction was apparent. Current and other observations seem to conform with the concept of a critical leaf number requirement for the onset and enhancement of flowering
