Abstract

A combination of higher temperature higher soil moisture and higher nitrogen supply tends to stimulate the vegetative growth and also the emergence of asparagus spears. The physiology of the plant tends to mobilize the reserves in the storage roots in favour shoot development under such condition: The restriction of soil moisture and low rate of nitrogen supply tend to enhance the accumulation of reserves in the storage roots. The production of good asparagus spears is greatly dependent on the reserve in storage roots. It is necessary to force the plant to rest in summer (forced dormancy) by means of water stress and temporal nitrogen deficiency to harvest quality asparagus in the autumn. The production of asparagus spears in the autumn can be improved by using irrigation and nitrogen nutrition to regulate differentiation: restricted water and nitrogen supply during the summer and abundant and frequent water and nitrogen supply during the harvest period in the autumn
