Abstract

Grazing areas for dairy cattle in Fiji include flat and hill soils. Hills have Batiki and Koronivia grasses while on the flats Para grass is predominantly grown with different species of Siteria. Soils on the hills and flats do not differ much on their chemical properties. Soils are acidic. Nitrogen and Phosphate deficiency appear to be the most pronounced nutritional problems with potassium to a lesser degree in the soils of the pasture growing areas of Fiji. Pasture herbage analysis revealed deficiencies of nitrogen phosphorus and in some cases potassium. Fertilizer trials done in dairy pasture growing areas showed significant responses to nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer application to pasture grasses. Legume species also responded well to phosphate fertilization
