Abstract

Recent shifts in emphasis in rural development policies towards the large majority of rural population had resulted in the reorientation of the dynamics of rural development strategies. These included the development and testing of more appropriate technologies the employment of professional extension workers and the strengthening of rural institutions as vehicles to accelerate agricultural development. This paper outlined the concept of farmers institutions in the rural settings and their roles in rural development. Some aspects of farmers institutions specifically in relation to food production were further clarified and illustrated by available local examples. The prevailing demands on a rethinking and adjustment of rural institutional related issues with respect to farming system were further analyzed and submitted for discussion
