Abstract
Large quantities of food produced were lost between harvest and consumption. Typically the minimum overall losses for durable crops such as cereal grains and grain legumes were about 10% while for nongrain and other perishables were 20% or higher. Postharvest food losses might result from biological or physical causes or from inadequate storage facilities transportation and marketing system. The nature causes extent and location of postharvest food losses and the means by which they might be assessed were discussed. A brief description was made of the various steps that could be taken to minimise losses. Finally an outline of actions that could be taken to improve the situation was proposed
