Abstract

This paper discussed some of the issues pertaining to the research and development (R and D) in food production primarily from MARDI's standpoint within the context of the National Agricultural Policy and the Fifth Malaysia Plan particularly the emphasis on reducing the food import bill rehabilitating idle land and increasing private sector participation in agriculture. Subsequently MARDI's R and D experience on vegetables livestock processed food and maize were described together with an indication of the achievements as well as problems encountered thus far so as to highlight the need for the vertical integration of research efforts in food production. Over and above the need for the consolidation and integration of R and D efforts the paper emphasized the need to consider food production within a sector-wide framework with a clear understanding of the objectives of proposed actions as well as their consequences
