Myers, P. A . and MacLennan, D. G. and Love, G. H. (1982) The production of ethanol by yeast fermentation - an economic evaluation. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
This paper will deal not with the technology of ethanol production, but with the economic aspects of producing fuel ethanol from a waste material such as molasses. Australia, in common with many countries of the world and in response to the so-called energy crisis, has been looking at alternative energy sources. Australia is very well endowed with natural resources. For example, it has plenty of coal and natural gas as well as abundant reserves of shale oil. However, Australia's oil reserves are currently decreasing and in the medium to long term, Australia will have a shortage of liquid fuel. Alternative liquid fuels for Australia are oil from shale, oil from coal, methanol (which can be produced from coal or natural gas) and ethanol. Over the past few years in Australia, there have been various levels of research and development on all these alternative liquid fuels. In this paper, it will be the production of ethanol by fermentation that will be considered.
