Sahir Othman, . The captive breeding programme for the seladang (Bos gaurus hubbacki): An assesment and recommendations. pp. 96-103. ISSN 0121-8126

Abstract

givesThis paper an overview of the management of gaur (Bas gaurus hubbacki) captive breeding after 18 years of its establishment (1982-2000). The objective of the establishment was consistent with the conservation status (endangered) of the seladang that warranted ex-situ conservation to prevent its extinction. Captive breeding was carried out successfully and inbreeding was prevented. Out of 52 births only 18 (35) deaths occurred. Five (27) of the deaths were caused by stress during or after the animals were transported to different place. It is concluded that the establishment of the gaur captive-breeding project was justified and should be continued. A research project on re-introduction should be conducted before actual re-introduction commences.
