Abstract
Oil palm is an important economic crop for Malaysia. Genetic engineering could be applied to produce transgenic oil palms with high value fatty acids and novel value-added products to ensure the sustainability of the palm oil industry. One of the targets of the oil palm genetic engineering programme is synthesizing biodegradable plastics (polyhydroxyalkanoates) in oil palm. Two types of plastics targeted were polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polyhydroxybutyrate-co-velerate (PHBV). Few constructs for producing the above plastics were produced and transformed into oil palm. Two plasmids, produced by MIT scientist, which carries all the genes under the control of ubiquitine promoter, were transformed into oil palm embryogenic calli and have to date produced many putative transgenic poliembryogenic lines and small plantlets. PCR and Gas Chromatography analyses on the transformed cultures and plantlets have been initiated with some encouraging results. Transformation of oil palm embryogenic calli with four other constructs (two each for PHB and PHBV driven by either combination of constitutive promoters or mesocarp specific promoter), produced at MPOB, has been initiated with some has already undergoing selection on Basta. Progress made to date and problem faced will be discussed.
