Abstract
Two fertilizer protection trials were carried out on deep peat (Anderson series) near Sibu, Sarawak where the average annual rainfall is about 3500mm The first trial on first year immature palms tested 4 controlled release fertilizers 4groblen, Multicote, Sumicoat and Apex polyon), surface application of normal estate organic fertilizers, inorganic fertilizers with MOP and Urea applied in perforated plastic 1gs and a zero fertilizer treatment. The 7 treatments applied during planting were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replicates. 9 months after planting, vegetative measurements showed that the treatment using fertilizer protection technique was the most cost-effective. In the second trial on newly mature palms, 5 treatments were tested using RCBD with 4 replicates: • -Application of fertilizers in perforated plastic bags, surface applied at 2 bags/ palm • -Use of a controlled release fertilizer (Sumicoat) by subsoil application (3 pockets / palm) • -Use of an organic fertilizer (Greenlife) • -Sub-soil application of normal estate inorganic fertilizers (3 pockets / palm) • -Surface application of normal estate inorganic fertilizers (Control) Results todate showed that application of MOP and Urea in perforated plastic bags is a cost-effective and labour-saving method of manuring oil palm planted on deep peat. The protection period for each round of application is about 5-6 months. An added advantage of this technique is the ease of checking the evenness of fertilizer application.
