Abstract

Taman Negara is a tri-state National Park located in the centre of Peninsula Malaysia. It supports a diversity of habitats plant communities and wildlife. Thus Taman Negara can offer a lot of wilderness recreation opportunities from its vast recreation resources. However the major goal of the park is to conserve and preserve its rainforest ecosystem. Then the park's recreation objectives are to offer only natural environment unique and primitive wilderness recreation opportunities to users up to its sustained yield carrying capacity. This is necessary to control the environment from biological and physical degradation and to maintain the satisfaction of the experience. Since demand for wiIderness recreation is high and expected to increase in the future due to its uniqueness and being an uncommon area in Malaysia the park has to classify its resources for different opportunities without any detrimental effects to the environment and has to venture other parts of the park for future recreation resource. Recreational development at the park's headquarters has to stop as it is nearing maximum carrying capacity. Lastly this paper recommends some management and development strategies on maximizing satisfaction of the wilderness experience conserving the ecosystem through biotic management managing users and researching alternative and future recreation resources.
