Abstract

A study on the home range of the captive-bred sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) in the wild was conducted in Sungkai Wildlife Reserve Perak from May to November 2000. The mean monthly home range size for the male and female were 1.80 0.83 km and 2.68 1.33 km respectively. The 95 harmonic mean estimation gave 2.71 0.87 km and 3.82 1.15 km respectively. The difference between the male and female monthly home range size was not significant (Mann-Whitney U-test; 0.05). The study also indicates that the individual male took five months to stabilize its home range whilst the female took four months and the ideal monthly home range size for sambar deer is probably about 2.5 km. The overlapping home range between the male and female was 29.1 . The male used 20.1 of its monthly home range per day whilst the female used 29.2.
