Abstract
An analysis is made of the age composition of seven herds of elephant in Peninsular Malaysia. The Malayan Elephant has a long gestation period of 22 months. Young animals become sexually mature after an even longer period of between 8 and 12 years. The sex ratio at birth is determined and found to be 100/100 with males leaving the herd on reaching maturity or decreasing through shooting. After birth the Malayan Elephant breeds again after 4 years and 4 months indicating a low rate of productivity.
