Abstract

Ganoderma boninense is the causal pathogen of basal stem rot of oil palms. It is a potential threat to oil palm-growing industries worldwide because the disease cannot as yet, be effectively controlled by fungicides. This study assesses the efficacy of Trichoderma harzianum as a biological control agent of the disease on artificially¬infected oil palm seedlings. Results showed that at end of experiment or week 20, 100% of untreated plants were infected, showing a disease severity index (DSI) of 75%. In contrast, only 20% infection was recorded for plants given an early treatment, with a DSI of 5%. In delayed treatment, the DSI was 35%. This study shows that conidial suspensions of Trichoderma harzianum applied as a soil drench has the potential to act as a biological control agent of a disease which has so far evaded treatment and early detection.
