Abstract

With over twenty years involvement in propagating oil palms by tissue culture, AAR has collected a reasonable wealth of experience and lessons from its clonal evaluation trials as well as commercial test plantings. Based on these experiences and lessons, a review is made on clonal behaviour and the performance of clones. Topics discussed under clonal behaviour include somaclonal variations observed i.e. the mantling phenomenon and extended juvenility, the poor pollination problem and yield cycles. Under the subject of mantling, early studies on reversion of mantleness are also discussed. The clonal performance aspect, besides yields, will dwell on ortet/ramet performance relationship. Clone x environment (location and temporal) interactions, important issues in clone behaviour and consequent clone selection, are also discussed, especially their importance to ortet selection. Considerations for future clonal trials that take cognizance of effects somaclonal variation, pollination failure, yield cycle, clone x environment interaction, and clone x agronomy effect, form the concluding remarks of this paper.
