Abstract

Protected forests are established for the protection and conservation of the rich forest biodiversity. In addition, it contains an ecosystem diversity that consists of most forest types and also aquatic ecosystem of rivers and other water bodies. Species biodiversity of flora and fauna in Kedah’s protected forests is among the richest in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Among the special features of Gunung Jerai are the existence of dense populations of Leptospermum flavescense, Baeckia frutescens and members of Myrtaceae, Fagaceae, Lauraceae, Orchidaceae in a small area. In addition, it also has some species of Nepenthes, including other species that are endemic to Peninsular Malaysia. All these assets could play some roles in ecological and environmental education, research for researchers from local universities and research institutes, including forestry departments and non-government agencies. Together with Ulu Muda Forest Reserve and Recreational Forests in Kedah, it could play a role in biodiversity conservation in both the country and the state. This function will be discussed un relation to eco-tourism in the north of Peninsular Malaysia.
