Abstract
Gunung Jerai supports 143 species (including 8 varieties) from 70 genera and 28 families, representing 22.1% of 647 Peninsular Malaysian species. Five species were identified as new records to Kedah viz. Deparia petersenii (Kunze) M. Kato ssp. deplexa (Kunze) M. Kato, Diplazium kunstleri Holttum, Taenitis dimorpha Holttum, Asplenium borneense Hooker and Asplenium normale D. Don. The fern- allies contributed 10 species including 3 varieties. Polypodiaceae by far is the largest family with 16 species, followed by Dennstaedtiaceae (13 species), Hymenophyllaceae (12 species), Dryopteridaceae (9 species) and Schizaeaceae (8 species). The genus, Lindsaea which consists of 8 species is the largest. The results also show that the terrestrial pteridophytes are the largest group with 85 species (62.5%) and the epiphytic pteridophytes with 45 species (37.5%).
