Abstract

Taxonomic account of Annonaceae of Gunung Jerai is presented and noteworthy taxa are highlighted. A total of 10 genera and 20 species were collected in the expedition and another 6 species were listed from previous collections. Notable among those are rare and endemic northern elements such as Goniothalamus subevenius J. Sinclair, G. umbrosus J. Sinclair, Alphonsea cylindrica King. The species G subevenius which is known from its types was once collected in 1893 by H. N. Ridley and was seldom seen or collected in Peninsular Malaysia since then. Goniothalamus umbrosus was previously known only from south Thailand, Kelantan, northern Terengganu and Perlis and the discovery of this species in Gunung Jerai bridges the northern populations with type populations in Pulau Pinang once considered as an introduced stock. Several species of Annonaceae such as Polyalthia rumphii and Goniothalamus giganteus were seen in mass-flowering and like other aromatic species they are potential shade and ornamental plants that can be domesticated and bred for nursery businesses.
