Abstract

Two types of glands were recorded on the epidermal surface of the pitchers of Nepenthes albomarginata, N. ampullaria and N. gracilis. These glands were nectar glands and digestive glands. Nectar glands were found on the lower lid surface in all species but absent in N. ampullaria. The nectar glands were denser on the lower lid surface of N. albomarginata but sparse in N. gracilis. Nectar glands known as marginal glands were also found on the peristome of the pitcher mouth of N. ampullaria and N. albomarginata and in between the inner peristome teeth of N. gracilis. The inner wall surface of pitcher is partly glandular or wholly glandular. The wholly glandular pitchers of N. ampullaria have its inner wall wholly covered with digestive glands whereas in partly glandular pitchers of N. gracilis and N. albomarginata, the inner pitcher wall were covered with digestive glands on the lower half part and covered with wax and lunate cells on the upper half part. Two types of digestive glands were recorded in the pitcher plants of the three species studied. The overarched digestive glands were recorded in N. albomarginata and N. ampullaria and exposed digestive glands in N. gracilis.
