Abstract

A total of 48 species belonging to 30 families were randomly collected and subjected to cytotoxicity and antimicrobial screening. Several plants were also collected and cultivated at SDTC for further studies. Cytotoxicity screening was performed using the MTT assay method using human breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and Tamoxifen, an anticancer drug, as a positive control for comparison. The MTT assay suggests that 15% of plant species tested contains compounds that are cytotoxic to T-47D cells. However, none of the plant extract tested was cytotoxic towards MCF- 7 cells. For the antimicrobial screening, a total of eight panel organisms comprising five non-pathogenic microbes, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cereviciae, Aspergillus niger, Bacillus sphaericus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and three from the pathogenic group, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA S138, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, VRE were subjected to the ADT assay method whereby the appearance of an inhibition zone would indicate the presence of antimicrobial activity. All plant species showed an inhibition towards some of the panel organisms tested, except Didymocarpus malayana (Gesneriaceae) and Dehaasia sp. (Lauraceae), which did not show any signs of inhibition. Further investigation will be performed on these promising plant extracts.
