Abstract

Gunung Jerai or Kedah Peak is a well-known botanical excursions and plant collection site during the colonial days. However, after Independence, it has not received the similar attention as in the past. Its richness in flora and uniqueness in vegetation has attracted many phytogeographical and ecological studies which climaxed with that of Kochummen in the 1980's. It has more than 1000 species of flowering plants and more than 400 are highland species, notably members of Orchidaceae. The botanical history of Gunung Jerai is traced up to the present.
