Abstract

A total of 11 species in seven genera and two families (Cicadidae, 10 species in six genera; Tibicinidae, one species) was recorded for Gunung Jerai. This was based on specimens obtained through two sampling occasions, in 1-3 June and 21-23 October 2005, each time using light traps set at two locations: the base-camp area (800m a.s.l.) and the trail-access to the summit of the mountain (1300m a.s.l.). Since there has been no previous publication on cicadas from Gunung Jerai, this account forms a preliminary cicada record for the area. Chremistica sp. and Pomponia sp. are possibly new species, since morphologically they differ from all other known cicada species. Manifestation of the cicada species richness and composition of Gunung Jerai were slightly better in June than in October. All three specimens of Pomponia lactea were all that were obtained from the light traps set at 1300m a.s.l., the rest (82 specimens comprising of 10 species in seven genera) were all obtained from light traps set at 800m a.s.l. Thicker and longer-duration fog at higher altitude seemed to be the main reason for such discrepancies; and among the species obtained, P. lactea has often been noted as typical montane species. Purana tigrina, Puranoides jaafari, Dundubia jacoona and Pomponia sp. appeared temporally more common. However, the abundance of these four species varied temporally, with D. jacoona, P. jaafari, P. tigrina appeared relatively more abundant in June than October while Pomponia sp. appeared the opposite. Chremistica sp., Purana guttularis, Orientopsaltria padda, Orientopsaltria saudarpadda and Abroma maculicollis were even rarer than Purana nebulilinea and P. lactea.
